What is an Empty Bowls event? Great question! It’s a special event to help fight hunger while supporting local farmers right here in our community. How does it do that? We present the community a ticketed meal, and then 100% of the profits from your ticket purchase go toward supporting the Montavilla Farmers Market’s Double Up Food Bucks program, part of Everybody Eats. You enjoy delicious local soup, sip refreshing local beer, and you get to take home a beautiful ceramic bowl!
Why an empty bowl? The empty bowl is a reminder that not all in our community are fortunate enough to have bountiful tables full of nutritious food and that we can help ensure our neighbors have enough to eat.
What is the Double Up Food Bucks program? Each year the market matches thousands of dollars in food stamps for low-income farmers market shoppers. This dollar for dollar match (up to ten dollars per eligible customer per week) can provide several meals of fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs and healthy meats, for shoppers otherwise unable to afford it.
So tell me more about this meal and the Empty Bowls party….It’s going to be DELICIOUS. Your ticket will include three seasonal soup courses, prepared by Portland chefs, paired with local beer or cider and local artisan bread. It also includes a pint of ale from Montavilla Brew Works and appetizers! There will be an amazing silent auction full of great food-related items, and you will get to take home your bowl as well. What a deal!
Soup? It’s a theme. Roll with it! The Empty Bowls theme is used around the world to fight hunger. The idea is that we can eat simply, feed our community and support our local farmers.
Are kids allowed? Sorry, kids are not allowed at this venue. Please plan accordingly.
